Family Promise and Prospect- Ways to Help

Last fall Family Promise of Essex County (formerly IHN) made it official that the emergency shelter program we operated in our churches and synagogues for more than three decades would change to a scattered site set-up in which families in crisis are being housed in hotels or temporary apartments until they get their permanent homes.

For now, Prospect Presbyterian is one of about two dozen congregations and groups supporting the families by helping with dinners and groceries. Our week to provide that assistance is May 15.

Since families primarily do their own cooking, we will provide just one dinner for each of the seven families currently in the shelter program along with that week’s groceries and household items. We will take the food and groceries Tuesday, May 17 to the Family Promise office in Montclair where families will come and pickup or staff will deliver.

Your coordinator team at Prospect will be reaching out to those who participated in the email signups of past years but also invite newcomers who would like to help the families as they navigate their individual paths to a secure home. Look for us during fellowship hour or contact Nancy Shields, 732 642 1494; email:

Hope you will join us.
