Community Coalition on Race Integrated Art Circles
Prospect Church has a longstanding relationship with the Community Coalition on Race,
here in Maplewood and South Orange. One of their latest initiatives is to hold sessions where people can meet their neighbors, explore their artistic side (though no skill in needed) or learn about something new. These are free programs- registration is refunded once you come to the class. Classes highlighted in blue are even held right here at Prospect and some led by Prospect members! Four Mondays 6:00 PM – 8:00PM March 6 – March 27 Build connections as the group formulates a shared vision in creating a designed path using painted stones as the material. The painted stone path will be located in the Maplewood/South Orange community, easily accessible to public viewing. This will be a fun, creative workshop where no experience is necessary. CIRCLE 2 OPERA Enrichment -ARTIST: Lori Brown Mirabal
Four Mondays 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM April 3– April 24 This multifaceted course begins with an intriguing recounting of the history and essentials of opera through the unique lens of racial diversity. Together, participants will view, listen to and discuss operas written and performed by diverse composers and artists. This knowledge will be used to create and present personal Life-Poems set to music. NOTE: No singing is required at all. CIRCLE 3 THEATRICAL IMPROVISATION ARTIST: Clark Jackson
Four Saturdays 10:00 AM – 12 Noon May 6 – May 27 Are you ready to try Improv? Through this experience, you will work with an award-winning actor and educator to play theatre games, learn acting basics, make new friends, build group trust and work on scenes for performance. CIRCLE 4 MOSAIC PROJECT ARTIST: Sandra Charlap
Four Tuesdays 6:30 PM- 8:30 PM June 6 – June 27 DESCRIPTION: Our circle will translate our vision of DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) into a fantastic array of color and sparkle using glass tile to create a mosaic that will be displayed in our community permanently. You will learn how to use a wide range of materials, adhesives, and grouts for installation. CIRCLE 5 LEARN TO JUGGLE ARTIST: Sandra Leith
Four Thursdays 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM July 1 – July 6 Here’s your chance to release that inner child and learn the most basic circus trick of all-- juggling. We will focus on juggling patterns, and also touch on the history of juggling and how it happens in different countries. Our class will end with a group showcase, demonstrating team and individual juggling skills. CIRCLE 6 PUBLIC MURAL ARTIST:Roberta Melzl
Four Mondays 6:00 PM – 8:00PM Sept. 16 – Sept. 27 As a group we will formulate a vision for a public mural that best represents our environment and community. We will decide which materials work best for this project and work as a team to create and install our artwork for local public display. CIRCLE 7 JOURNEY TO PERCUSSION/SHEKERE ARTIST: Ahmondylla Best
Four Saturdays 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Oct. 7 – Oct. 28 Learning to play the this beaded gourd instrument known as a shekere can take you on a journey of percussion ranging from exhilaration to meditation. Participants will explore traditional rhythms, tone, tempo, improvisation and composition as a group and in solo performance. CIRCLE 8 ABSTRACT ART & MOVEMENT ARTIST: Jasmine Carter
November 3rd and 10th, 6:00 PM—8:00 PM “Outside The Lines” is an interdisciplinary art experience showcasing movement and abstract art. Jasmine Carter, dancer artists and educator facilitates a guided paint session motivated by questions that challenge racial, cultural and social integration. Through creative communication we explore vulnerable and honest conversations about diversity and social inequalities while building community. *Registration fees will be refunded pending class participation.
